March 24 NYLA update email

NYLA Update as of March 24, 2020

(this is a copy of the email sent out to all NYLA families)

Good morning Newtown Youth Lacrosse families,

I hope this email finds you well, and your family is safe and healthy during this difficult time.

The lacrosse season is still significantly lower on the priority list compared to keeping this pandemic in check, learning an entire new way to educate our kids, and balancing our own challenges at work, but we wanted to give you an update from the board.

We are still not holding any events until further notice.

At a minimum, we will not hold any events while Newtown Public Schools are closed, or our state and local Newtown Government continue to recommend “no large groups or gatherings”.  With Governor Lamont extending school closures until April 20, we are, at best, hoping for a truncated season in some form.  We could also face having the season cancelled altogether.

If we were to cancel our entire season, the two items to address are uniforms and refunds.

  • Uniforms are custom orders and are almost complete with production.  We cannot cancel any orders, and for the most part we don’t want to cancel, as we are still hoping to have a season.
  • This year’s uniform is the same we’ll use for the next 2-3 seasons.  If your son/daughter is in K-7th grade, they will be able to use this uniform in future seasons.
  • We will issue refunds for your registration fees, minus a small administrative fee.  We incur costs as an organization, regardless if we execute a season or not (website fees, banking and accounting fees, insurance, fees paid to use Credit cards for registration, etc.).   Most of these fees are covered through last year’s fundraising and surplus. However, to cover the processing fees we incur through registration through our website, this year’s admin fee will be approximately 4% of your registration fee (rather than a flat amount).  As a non-profit organization, we simply do not have the funds to refund every penny of your registration, and we hope you can understand.  Again, this is all based on our season being cancelled completely.

If we end up having a shortened season, then we have a lot of questions to answer.

-How many games will each team play?  How many tournaments?

-How many weeks of practice will we be able to provide before the first game?

-Will NYLA refund a portion of our registration? (We anticipate yes, but amounts will be TBD at the end of the season)

We do not have answers to these questions at this time.  Our league, CONNY, has only officially delayed the beginning of the season until April 13, but this determination was made 11 days ago, and I expect that to be extended.  Our town is faring better than many other towns within CONNY regarding COVID-19 cases, so even if we are able to practice and play, many of our opponents may not be.

As you are all too aware, the fight against COVID-19 will be difficult, may be longer than expected, and recommendations change often.  NYLA’s board of directors and coaches will continue to discuss our options, and will continue to plan for a successful lacrosse season.

Please reach out with any questions.

Stay safe, and please please please continue to do our part to flatten the curve.

Thank you,

Kevin Massett
